Photography
My mom bought an entry-level DSLR in 2010 and I have been obsessed with photography since. I have worked professionally to photograph various events, graduation headshots, families, engagement sessions, and more - now I focus on shooting things that interest me. The last three years has been mostly wildlife.
I have done some videography and video production simply due to circumstances of physically being present and able to work a camera.
My dear friend Tamara Roshka taught me nearly everything I know about the basics of photography and editing.
You can keep up with my photography on my Instagram page.

I captured this photo in the summer of 2019 on Inuinnait Nuna, or Inuit Homelands near Iqaluktuuttiaq, Kitlineq, Nunavut (Cambridge Bay, Victoria Island, Nunavut). I was at a camp in the Intensive Monitoring Area on the island and was watching some researchers launch their fixed-wing drone. Ovayok, or Mt Pelly, the largest glacial esker in the region, looms in the background.

March 2022
I captured this photo in the summer of 2021 on Inuinnait Nuna, or Inuit Homelands near Iqaluktuuttiaq, Kitlineq, Nunavut (Cambridge Bay, Victoria Island, Nunavut). I was with my field assistant driving in an area known as West Arm searching for sampling sites. We parked the truck and almost as soon as I got out, an Arctic tern started dive-bombing me. This behaviour normally indicates a nest nearby. I retreated and saw the tern land and share a tender moment with her freshly hatched chick.
Visualizing Science Image Contest

This photo was captured during a visit to Treaty 5 territory in Manitoba, to the town of Churchill. I was invited onto the Beluga Boat, a research vessel funded by Explore.org. They also livestream belugas from the Churchill River Estuary daily during the summertime, and invite folks to come aboard and answer questions live via Explore.org. I captured this beluga image using a GoPro.

Many species of shorebirds migrate to the Arctic during the summertime to breed and raise their chicks, including different kinds of sandpipers, plovers, phalaropes, and more.

I usually try to have my camera on me while I'm collecting samples for my PhD. There are many wonderful birds that migrate to the tundra to breed, including 3 or 4 species of loons.

Important Bird Area & Wildlife Protected Area
Treaty 1 Manitoba
I sustained a(nother) brain injury one week before the pandemic was declared in Canada. Birdwatching became an important hobby that was stimulating, exciting, and challenging, yet gentle enough to not trigger post-concussion symptoms. My interest has only increased since!
Oak Hammock Marsh is my favourite place to visit during spring migration. Many Arctic nesters pass through on their way North.

Fort Whyte Alive
Treaty 1 - Winnipeg, Manitoba
Fort Whyte Alive is a reclaimed urban green space that offers a huge range of activities for people of all ages. Their values are sustainability, education, community, and connection to nature. It is conveniently located within city limits and I often visit to bird watch.
This green space attracts many different species of birds, and when I visit, I often look for warblers.

Grand Beach Provincial Park
Treaty 5, Manitoba
I had never been able to photograph hummingbirds before. A visit to this provincial park resulted in hundreds, if not thousands of hummingbird photos.
I was in this park to deliver a freshwater biodiversity and birdwatching workshop to Metis and First Nation youth participating in a day camp through the Manitoba Metis Federation.

Manitoba Underdogs - Winnipeg, MB
My partner and I began fostering dogs during the pandemic in Guelph. I missed my family dogs back home in Winnipeg, couldn't afford a dog of my own, and knew that my life would likely return to frequent travel. Fostering was the perfect solution!
Fiji and Bubly are brothers and have both since been adopted. Fiji is now part of our family forever!
We fostered Desmond in Guelph and he is now happily adopted.
